I have to admit. I like my wine as wine. I like it dry. And when it comes to rosé, I like it crisp and extra dry. So when this arrived on my doorstep? Well, I was skeptical. But today is National Wine Day, so I figured what the heck. Maybe I should break out of my wine comfort zone and get a little funky. A little fruity …
And, seriously, the description for Fruits and Wine did pull at my heart strings. I mean, what’s not to like about this?
A refreshing, low-cal French rosé in three flavors: Cherry Rosé, a delicious blend of rosé wine and cherry juice that delivers natural and delicately sweet notes; Grapefruit Rosé, a succulent blend of rosé wine and grapefruit juice that delivers its sweet and tart notes, and the Strawberry Rosé, a luscious blend of rosé wine and strawberry juice that offers sweet and refreshing notes.
Oh, and THIS: It’s all produced from Moncigale — located at the heart of three emblematic vineyards of southern France: Provence, Languedoc-Roussillon and the Rhône Valley. You guys remember how I feel about the Rhône Valley, right?!
So, what I’m getting at is that I was powerless. I had to try this wine. And it was … pleasant. I only got to try the Cherry, and I really expected it to be very sweet — and it was — but it really was pleasant. It had lots of cherry flavor (maybe a bit like the cherry flavor you get in cough syrup, but in a much more pleasant way), but was still crisp and it went down way easy on a warm evening. I honestly enjoyed it much more than other sweet wines, like a moscato.
A serving of these (about 4 ounces) has about 60 to 75 calories and 5 to 9 grams of sugar, depending on the flavor, which really is pretty good for a sweet alcoholic drink. And, I do appreciate that it has less alcohol than normal wine with about 7 percent. (That also keeps the calorie count down.) I figure it’s never a bad thing to be able to drink a little more, without having as much alcohol — especially if you take this out for a picnic, which is probably the ideal way to enjoy any of these. It’s just so summery and fruity, and with a screw top, it’s easy to take and go with you.
So, yeah, I won’t be ditching my regular rosé any time soon, but if I’m entertaining others who like a sweeter wine or I simply want to fruit it up a bit, I’d totally share a bottle of this. (Especially the grapefruit flavor … which I’m SO interested in trying!)
How do you like your summer wine? Fruity? Dry? Sweet? Oh, and happy National Wine Day! —Jenn
